  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from SirReadsAlot -- How I didn’t take responsibility for a scandal and then act like I’m a leader : The author defines what it means to hide behind faux intellectual superiority to mask the scandal regarding Google. I saw her on CNN and immediately purchased the book. It’s a well- masked justification of her own leadership ineptness and lack of accountability for an intellectual scandal. I suggest reading The NY Times article. It’s amazing how people inside the beltway somehow think they are on the frontlines of our culture and national dialogue. They have almost no self-awareness. This book is a blueprint for how not to renew. I suggest the author get out into neighborhoods, community centers and towns and actually find out how people need renewal rather than prescribe it to us from an ivory tower. Pure junk. Read the Times article. Check out my other reviews - this is the first negative review I have written in a long time. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jeff -- Ted Lasso with a Doctorate : Relentless positivity and hopefulness. Readiness to admit failings and then make things right. A raw depiction of anxiety and depression, and the ways friends, family, and experts help us through those challenges. Praise for therapy (called "coaching," appropriately, in DC vernacular). A symphony composed around the theme of caring. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Rebecca Samm Sacks -- A must-read personal leadership journey tying together history, power, and how we govern today. : Slaughter’s personal leadership journey has profound lessons for how we understand the relationship between history and the present, and why power is as much about connection and curiosity as it is about control. This book also teaches readers that the domestic sphere of caregiving can and should be brought directly to bear on the Big Ideas that shape public policy. A must-read for leaders of all organizations as well as for those who want to better understand how we got to this moment and the path forward to realize the promise of America. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mary Lou Babbitt -- Profound exploration of topic : I did not know anything about the author or New Republic. But Anne Marie reveals her journey and growth ( Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from JD&CR -- Concise and inspiring book in these difficult times! : I devoured this book's combination of accessible prose, relatable memoir, and innovative policy proposals in just two sittings. Slaughter deftly weaves together her personal story of renewal as an organizational leader with advice for leaders everywhere and a blueprint for a more free and equal society for all. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Nanette -- Advice and hope from an author who cares deeply about America : A brave and candid book about personal and organizational renewal, based on the author’s career and life experiences, explored with humility and thoughtfulness. Renewal will help many ambitious people who are in, or aspire to, executive positions. It’s also full of wise policy recommendations for the U.S. to thrive in the upcoming decades. An immersive read from an author who cares deeply about the country’s future and the people--all of us--who will drive that renewal. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Gadi Ben-Yehuda -- Page-turning profile in authentic leadership grounded in courage and vulnerability : I had long planned to read this book. What I didn't plan on was reading it in one sitting until the wee hours of the morning. In Renewal, Dr. Slaughter offers a portrait of authentic leadership grounded in courage and vulnerability as she talks about her leadership journey and how she worked through an incredibly challenging time at New America. Her words will serve as a balm for any leader who has navigated rocky shoals and a compass for those confronting turbulent waters. Women especially will appreciate the realness of Dr. Slaughter's words, which include an honest reflection on privilege that showcases obvious introspection. Dr. Slaughter offers all of this against the backdrop of our complex times and with it a lesson many would do well to heed: challenging moments - at human and structural levels alike - also offer enormous opportunity ~if~ we can show up courageously to do the work. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Satisfied Customer -- A rare unflinching, and rich, reflection on the challenges of leadership : It is often said that you learn more from failure than success. But few leaders have the courage to air their shortcomings fully and publicly so others learn from them. That is what this book is -- a rare, unflinching, and thus very rich reflection on the challenges of leadership. It's at its best when it gives a raw and personal perspective on having to confront difficult professional situations. It also draws thoughtful parallels to what America must do to address its shortcomings in a time of deep division and polarization. A must read!
