Chapman -- Trace the history of the emergence of fundamentalist Christianity and find healing on the other side : This book is a must read for those of us formed in the evangelical church and have moved away from evangelical religion or have loved ones who remain and sense a suffocating constriction of the soul longing for guidance to understand and find a way to wholeness. I probably won't give it as a Christmas gift to family and friends who are still firmly entranced in the fundamentalist orbit. But, it helps me understand the story they're living in and actually increases a sense of empathy and compassion. However, there is also a prophetic edge that one must also allow to surface. The combination of the two: compassion and insight are the two weapons of the warrior for the human spirit. This book helps sharpen both edges of that sword...for such a time as this.
